Potty Training Strategy

Potty training with Alex continues to be a challenge. He makes very, very slow progress.

This week we are adopting a new policy. To bring parity between diaper changes and using the potty, now any time we change Alex's diaper/pull-up pants, we ALSO sit on the potty and wash our hands. So it's actually going to be MORE cumbersome and more of an interruption now for Alex to pee in his pants than to use the potty.

3 year old psychology is tough. I definitely don't have the hang of it yet.

When I was studying psychology, I thought child psychology was fascinating. So that's what kids are thinking!!!! Have you read Jean Piaget's 4 stages of development? I dunno, Piaget seemed to make the most sense of all the child psychologists. But hey, what do I know? I've never had kids!!!!

It's tough. You always have to be one step ahead of them, or at least not a step behind like I was half the time!

One method would be to give up on the pullups and just let him wet himself.

FYI, when you move to underpants make sure they are at least as cool as the pullups. Our son preferred the Disney pullups to white underpants!

I'd say ditch the pull-ups - go straight to pants and no looking back. He might surprise you after the first day or two when he realises that wetting himself isn't quite as 'nice' as it is in a pull-up! But whatever, they do all get there in the end. And bribery worked for us, I know not everyone approves but sometimes that added incentive to 'perform' on the toilet/potty is the final nudge to get them to go for it!
